How To Deal With Flood Damage Effects On Your Surfside Home

If moisture quickly passes through a surface and has a long time of exposure, then more damage is likely to occur to your property.

How To Deal With Flood Damage

During a flood damage event, the exposure time together with the permeance of materials usually determines the extent of the damage which results. Permeance is the ability of a material to resist moisture penetration. If moisture quickly passes through a surface and has a long time of exposure, then more damage is likely to occur to your Surfside property. If you act fast and get the water removed, there are high chances of having less damage and salvaging several items.

Let us start by looking at the effects of flood damage in Surfside, particularly on wood flooring, and the procedures that our SERVPRO technicians employ during the restoration process. Typically, wooden floors expand when they absorb moisture and with time warping and buckling may take place at the point where the boards meet. The rate of buckling usually is determined by the type of wood and the amount of moisture present.

Crowning and cupping also occur when the wood absorbs water. If the moisture permeated the wood from the lower sides, then its edges are likely to rise, and this is what we call cupping. Our SERVPRO technicians can sand out cupped areas where necessary. In cases where the top areas of the wood hold more water than its bottom and sides, the wood usually curves in what is known as crowning. When crowning occurs, sanding out sections is not an option.

Wooden floors usually have several infiltration points through coating breaks, between seams, under baseboards, among others which may not be necessarily on their top layer. If the water seeps in and combines with dirt, it can lead to the growth of mold. Our SERVPRO technicians use penetrating moisture meters to identify any hidden moisture. Also, to enhance the drying process, we might remove the laminated floor since they may act as moisture barriers.
